v 0.8.4 is live
I really expect this update to include the last of any changes to the main text of the book. I'm currently raising funds to pay a copy editor, at which point the game exits early access and I start looking at print options.
It's an exciting thing, to give myself permission to let go of having to make a million little tweaks. This decision comes even as I think up a different approach to the showdown roll, but at this point -- I just want the game to be done! I've run probably close to a hundred sessions now, and the game works. It doesn't need to be endlessly tinkering anymore. And I'm ready to move on to other things (like supplements ... or maybe working on a new game one of these days).
This does mean that I've had to cut back the scope of the game, just a little bit. I've been working on expanding the information about factions in the book for months and months now, even got some incredible work from a collaborator, and I know that work will still see the light of day, but most likely in a future supplement. Allowing myself to not have to rush that stuff means being able to focus on things like copy editing, creating a plain text version of the book, and maybe even an audiobook version like I've hoped we could do. Being able to move forward on those things means needing to be done with this. (As done as I'm ever going to be, at least.)
The only big change here is that, based on feedback from playtesting, there are now load limits set per playbook. This should make gear a little bit more interesting to use in play. Hopefully, you like the change, but if you don't -- it should be easy enough to ignore it.
Besides getting you a nice copy-edited, typo-free version of the game sometime soon, the only update that should be coming down the pike is newly designed playbooks within hopefully the next two weeks or so. I've separated out the rules reference sheets from the playbooks in this upload for that reason.
In preparation for copy editing, I spent a lot of time proofreading this weekend and ended up squashing a bunch of typos and stuff.
I'd love to hear what you think of these changes, and what's in store for the future of Bump in the Dark. It's been an absolutely wild year and I'm so grateful for all of the support everyone has given me with the game.
Changelog:
- Updated hunt creation procedure to include creating a quotation for each NPC. Generally updated and clarified guidance on running and creating hunts.
- Updated the included hunts for clarity and to incorporate quotations from NPCs.
- Clarified how to clear the wounded position as well as how gear such as the medical kit interacts with the condition.
- A hunter's maximum load is now determined by their playbook. Text updated throughout to reflect this.
- Character sheets were updated to reflect this new approach to load.
- Updated reference sheets to hopefully be prettier and easier to use at the table.
- Killed a million typos, clarified some wording, fixed some formatting, etc.
