Version 0.8.2: New approaches to downtime and conditions
I've been playtesting these changes for a couple of months now and I'm pretty happy with them and feel ready to push an update. I talk more in-depth about the changes here, but briefly, conditions now work similarly to conditions in games like Masks, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, and the upcoming Exiles, with a mechanical penalty and a narrative condition that must be met to clear them. Downtime moves things from the traditional "2 downtime activities each downtime" to an approach where you spend pre-rolled dice on your activities. It streamlines downtime and adds a fun kind of tactical element, of needing to figure out how to best spend your dice. You earn downtime dice based on how much bond you earn during fallout.
You can check out the big changes in Iron Country Autumn, a four-session series I ran for the Gauntlet Online Gaming Community.
Here's the full changelog:
- Total overhaul of the conditions system. Deleted the "conditions" section in the keeper chapter as further explanation was no longer required. Updated the play example to reflect these changes.
- Updated fallout and downtime procedures, introducing "downtime dice" as an update to and replacement of traditional downtime activities. Updated play examples to reflect these changes.
- Added text to describe the "disadvantage" mechanic (cut the highest die from an action roll, affected by some conditions).
- Renamed the "safe" position to "steady" and changed the focus of the position to being about having a particular advantage rather than "acting on your own terms." Adjusted results to be more consistent with the default tone of the game.
- The showdown roll procedure was adjusted so that unique clues can only contribute to the dice pool once.
- Added additional advice on how to use clues in play.
- Added guidance for framing scenes including "cutting away" from the action to a scene the hunters are not involved in.
- Updated playbooks and abilities to be consistent with the new approach to conditions and downtime.
- Updated the hunter play kit to incorporate these changes.
- Updated the character keeper to be consistent with v0.8.2. This was sorely needed as it was several iterations behind at this point.
- Updated the table of contents, index, and bookmarks to reflect changes. This is always the last thing I do because it's such a pain in the ass!
- Fixed miscellaneous typos and formatting shit.
